DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Birgit Neumair (Technische Universität München\, J
 ames-Franck-Straße 1\, 85748 Garching)\nIn the last years\, several neutr
ino oscillation experiments reported results not compatible within the 3-n
eutrino model\, which hint at the existence of light sterile neutrinos. To
test this hypothesis\, the SOX (Short distance neutrino Oscillations in B
oreXino) experiment will search for oscillations from active to sterile ne
utrinos by placing radioactive electron (anti-)neutrino sources underneath
the Borexino detector. Oscillations will be observed via a reduction of t
he detected interaction rate of the electron(anti-)neutrinos and an oscill
atory pattern as a function of the neutrino energy and travelled distance.
\n\nThe talk will give an overview of the project and of the expected dis
covery potential for a 100kCi $^{144}$Ce source. The major challenges of d
etermining the activity and the energy distribution of the source are disc
ussed with focus on their impact on the experimental sensitivity.\n\nhttps
