 he ALICE Collaboration.\n\n\n The ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) 
 detector was constructed\nto study the properties of hot and dense hadroni
 c matter formed in\nrelativistic nuclear collisions. During the second lon
 g LHC shutdown in\n2018-2019\, the collaboration plans to upgrade the curr
 ent vertex\ndetector\, the Inner Tracking System (ITS)\, in order to incre
 ase the reconstruction accuracy of secondary vertices and to lower the thr
 eshold of particle transverse momentum measurement.\n    The upgrade strat
 egy of ITS is based on the application of new\nMonolithic Active Pixel Sen
 sors (MAPS) designed in 0.18 um CMOS\ntechnology. The 50 um thick chip con
 sists of a single silicon die\nincorporating a 18 um high-resistivity sili
 con epitaxial layer (sensor\nactive volume) and matrix of charge collectio
 n diodes (pixels) with\nreadout electronics. Radiation hardness of the upg
 raded ITS is \none of the crucial elements in the overall performance of t
 he system. \nA wide set of MAPS structures with different read-out circuit
 s was \nproduced and is being studied by the ALICE collaboration to optimi
 ze the\npixel sensor functionality.\n    An overview of the ALICE ITS upgr
 ade and the expected\nperformance improvement will be presented together w
 ith selected \nresults from thorough campaign that includes several irradi
